Substantial antique Middle Eastern metal casket richly decorated with hand incised Arabic calligraphy, foliate ornament and geometric motifs. The piece is constructed in heavy metal and features a hinged lid, large circular carrying ring, prominent front lock plate and a broad stepped base. Its surface retains a deep naturally aged patina with oxidation, scratches, rubbing and other signs of long use.
The decorative vocabulary and construction are consistent with late 19th to early 20th century Mamluk Revival / Cairo ware type metalwork associated with Egypt and Syria. The exact workshop, country of manufacture and metal composition have not been confirmed, so the attribution is intentionally conservative.
A substantial and visually strong example of Islamic decorative metalwork, notable for its 4 kg weight, dense engraved decoration and architectural form.
