A substantial antique cast bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara (Lokeshvara), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, seated in a relaxed royal posture upon an architectural throne decorated with lion figures.
The deity wears an elaborate tall headdress containing a small seated image of Amitabha Buddha, an important identifying attribute of Avalokiteshvara. The figure is richly detailed with necklaces, armlets and extensively hand incised floral decoration to the garments. A large circular mandorla surrounds the head with a stylized flame border.
The sculpture is traditionally hollow cast and retains fibrous organic material within the internal casting core, consistent with traditional lost wax bronze casting methods.
The surface shows extensive natural brown, grey and green patination, oxidation, deposits and wear, with casting irregularities and losses to sections of the pierced throne base. Mounted on a later wooden display plinth.
