A rare and exceptional example of Mamluk era metalwork, this low profile brass bowl commands attention with its extraordinary surface decoration. Every inch of the exterior has been worked in intricate silver inlay (tausia), a hallmark technique of the finest Syrian workshops.
The body is organized into distinct horizontal registers:
- Calligraphic band: A sweeping band of cursive Arabic script likely a Quranic verse or royal benediction rendered in raised silver against a gilded ground, wrapping the full circumference of the bowl.
- Geometric frieze: Interlocking star polygons, hexagons, and foliate rosettes fill the lower body, demonstrating the geometric precision synonymous with Islamic decorative arts.
- Twisted rope borders: Pairs of braided silver borders frame each register, adding rhythm and structure to the composition.
The rim carries a fine gilded edge, and the base displays a densely patterned geometric field visible from above.
